contravene (verb) violate; break (law, rules, etc.).

When you contravene a law, you act against the law, you violate the law. A foreign national, trying to acquire property in your country contravenes the law of your country, because citizens alone have the right to hold property in any country. When you enter another country without a visa, you contravene or break the law of the country. A company supplying substandard or adulterated goods contravenes the law of consumer protection.

  • The foreign company allowed to carry on its trade activities in the country was ordered to be closed, because, contravening the law of the country, it has sent all the profits earned here to its native country, and did not reinvest even a part of them again here.
  • The club has contravened the law by keeping open its bar and continuing its night shows beyond 12 midnight, by when, according to law, it should close down.
