contumacious (adj) very stubborn (in resisting authority).
Resisting authority stubbornly is being contumacious. To be strongly disobedient is to be contumacious. When, especially a group of people, offer resistance to authority, or the government, they are contumacious.
- The civil rights activists staged a demonstration on the occasion of the visit of the communist country leader and were so contumacious that the police had to resort to cane charging to disperse them.
- The contumacious agitators were not cowed by the police. They defied them openly and even pelted stones at them, and burnt some police vehicles.
