convoke (verb) call people to attend a formal meeting; convene.

A meeting is convoked when it is convened. When people are told to come together for a meeting to discuss an important issue, a meeting is convoked. Such meetings refer especially to those of church officials or of the members of a university. In the case of a university a meeting so convoked is convocation, usually for the presentation of degrees. When there is an emergency in a country, the head of the state, usually the president convokes the legislature, that is, calls a meeting of the legislature.

  • The meeting of the bishops and the priests, though convoked very urgently, was attended by all of them as the issue to be discussed was important.
  • In certain countries, the president has the powers to convoke the legislature, especially in emergencies.
