convoluted (adj) very complicated and difficult to understand; twisted, coiled, and bent.

An explanation or an argument is convoluted if it is very difficult and complicated for anyone to follow. A convoluted explanation makes things more difficult rather than simpler and even confuses others. A story with a convoluted plot has so many twists and turns that the reader may find it difficult and confusing. A thing which is coiled around and has many twists and turns is also convoluted. A convoluted glass tube is a glass tube coiling around and twisted. A snake also lies convoluted. That is, it lies in coils.

  • Jane has much better communication ability than her husband Dick. While he indulges in a convoluted language to explain things, she makes things very simple and clear.
  • Convoluted glass tubes are very common in chemistry and physics labs. With their coils, twists, and turns, the tubes appear very funny and also complicated.
