cordon (noun) a ring formed by a troop of policemen, soldiers around an area.

When an accident takes place, the scene of the accident has a cordon of policemen around it. That is, policemen form a ring around the place to prevent people from going there, or people in there from coming out. The police or soldiers may throw a cordon around a place as a measure of security to a VIP, targeted by terrorists, or a prisoner when the prisoner supposed to be dangerous is being taken out.

  • The scene of the explosion had a cordon of policemen around it, so that none could enter the place and mix up the scent for the dogs of the dog squad.
  • The crowd broke into the cordon thrown around by the policemen to have a look of the serial killer, whom the police were bringing out of his hideout.
