coterie (noun) a small group of people with common interests.

A small group of people with similar interests and involved in similar activities form a coterie. They do not let others join them. They keep to themselves all the time and have regular meetings. A literary coterie, for example, is a small group of writers and enthusiasts of literature who meet regularly. We have also coteries of politicians. A small number of politicians forming a group trying for power or to influence decisions in their favor are a coterie. It is also called a clique.

  • Jamison's recent paintings in the exhibition have been criticized severely for their lack of depth by a coterie of art critics in London.
  • The coterie around the presidential candidate is sparing no effort to see their candidate win, and is said to have resorted to some underhand dealings in the process.
