countenance (noun) face.

A person's face is their countenance. Your countenance is usually an index of your feelings. That is, your face expresses your feelings. Your countenance, that is, your face, beams with a smile when you are happy, turns red when you are very angry, and so on.

  • Charles Smith's countenance turned red when he received the news that his daughter Julia had married a good-for-nothing Tom who had for long eyed the wealth she would inherit.
  • What her feeling was, none could understand, as her countenance remained stolid, showing no expression whatever. Neither her eyes nor her lips conveyed anything.
