countenance (verb) approve; tolerate; accept.

When you countenance something, you tolerate it. When you countenance your friend's proposal of an unlawful activity or irregularity, you accept it. An honest person cannot countenance dishonest dealings. That is, they cannot tolerate dishonest dealings.

  • Being a man of great integrity, he could not countenance his friend's proposal that they claim false traveling allowance.
  • The president made it clear that there would be no countenancing of any activity by any group of individuals, threatening the security or lowering the prestige of the country.
