When a person is crestfallen they are disappointed or sad at their failure, which they have not expected. Players returning home defeated are crestfallen, because of their disappointment and a sense of embarrassment. Your failure in an exam makes you crestfallen - that is, it makes you disappointed and look rather ashamed. You are sad when you are crestfallen.
