crevice (noun) a narrow crack (especially in a rock) and a wall.
A narrow opening caused by a crack, especially in a rock, or sometimes in a wall, is a crevice. Mountainsides usually have cracks or narrow openings on their rock faces and such openings are crevices. Mountaineers in their climb up the mountains usually use crevices for a foothold. Walls also have crevices, that is, narrow cracks or openings, on their sides.
- In his climb up the mountain, the mountaineer felt himself lucky, as the rock face along which he was climbing up had a number of crevices giving him a foothold at every stage.
- As the mountaineer rested his foot for a while in the crevice, it suddenly gave away under his weight, but fortunately the rope held him, and kept him from falling.
