criteria (noun) (plural form of criterion) a set of principles, rules, or standards on the basis of which a person or the quality of a thing is judged.

Good scores in GRE or TOEFL are the criteria for judging a candidate's eligibility for admission into the Masters courses in the US universities. That is, the admission into these universities is based on the candidates' performance in the exams. The criteria of assessing a person's ability to do a job well, are the basis on which they are considered good for the job. Such criteria may include their qualifications, their experience, their record of past achievements, etc..

  • The criteria for judging an artiste as worthy of an Oscar award are, first their performance in a movie, and in addition to it, their interpretation of the role and their suitability for the role.
  • It is very often difficult to understand the criteria applied by the Nobel Prize committee for the award of the Nobel Prize. There are surprise omissions like Mahatma Gandhi, who showed the world the new way of peace to solve any problem.
