culvert (noun) a drain, a waterway, or a pipe for water under a road or a railway.

A small waterway, usually a pipe or a drain, under a road or a railway track is a culvert. It avoids the water flooding the road or the railway. It also protects it from being breached during rains.

  • The culvert at that point of the road, built some seventy years ago has been blocked by mud and weeds, and as a result, the water has flowed on to the road.
  • With open fields and uneven ground on either side of the road, culverts are necessary at various points along the road to make it an all-weather road.
