curtail (verb) cut short; reduce.

When the amount you get is reduced, it is curtailed. An increase in hours of work naturally means a reduction of leisure. So an increase in work hours curtails your leisure. Restrictions on your activities curtail your freedom, that is, they reduce your freedom. If funds allotted for education are curtailed, the amount for education is reduced.

  • Emmy's promotion in the organization meant more responsibilities and longer hours at office, so his leisure was naturally curtailed. Now he has less time even for his family, let alone for social life.
