dabble (verb) do something without serious interest in it.

When you dabble at a game or an art, you play it or practice it without serious interest in it. You are not serious about politics if you dabble in politics. You dabble in an activity if you do not go steady at it.

  • Jenson dabbles in everything that engages his fancy for the moment, and leaves it at that and doesn't pursue it. The result is that he knows something of everything but nothing thoroughly.
  • The millionaire Flint dabbles in art just to be known for his artistic tastes but not because of any abiding interest in it.
