dally (verb) start a relationship with a person of the opposite sex without serious intentions; think of something but not seriously; to waste time doing a thing very slowly.

When a person starts an affair with someone without the particular intention of bringing it to the stage of marriage, they dally with the other person. They flirt. Young men and women may dally with each other, without thinking of a desirable end to their affair. That is, they take it easy and want it to be a flirtatious affair. To think not so seriously of something is also to dally. You dally with the idea of starting a business if you think a number of times about it without actually doing it. You are not serious about it. A person dallies with the idea of becoming a film star, if they just have the idea of it but do nothing about it. When you take too long to do a job, just to delay it, you dally.

  • Parents often warn their daughters against young men who dally with them and leave them after the initial attraction has worn off. Still girls do not pay heed to it and suffer in the end.
  • Fred and his friends have dallied with the idea of going on a world tour together quite often but so far it has remained only an idea. It is not likely they will do it.
