dawdle (verb) waste time; take a long time to do something or go to a place; loiter.

When you dawdle, you are not mindful of the job on hand, and waste time in a silly manner, talking and joking, without doing the work. A dawdler is one who doesn't take their job seriously. Their attention is not on the job. You dawdle along the way when without walking at a steady pace you just loiter and waste time. You just move about unmindful of your destination.

  • In spite of Clara’s warning, Morris dawdled all the afternoon talking and joking, painting only a small portion of the wall and at sunset realized that he had a lot of work left undone.
  • Eric's lack of confidence forces him to dawdle whenever he has a task on hand. He wastes time doing only bits of the task and fails to keep to the schedule.
