deadlock (noun) stalemate; failure to reach an agreement.

In the course of negotiations between two parties to a dispute, if the talks break down because neither is willing to make any concession to the other party, there is a deadlock. A deadlock, in other words, is a failure of both the parties to reach an agreement. There is a face off between the parties, when there is a deadlock.

  • There is a deadlock between the management and the workers' union with the management refusing to grant certain allowances which the union is very firm about. Their failure to reach an agreement has resulted in the workers continuing the strike.
  • Despite the US's efforts to mediate between Israel and Palestine, the deadlock between the two continues with no signs of a cease-fire.
