debunk (verb) disprove; expose (claims, theories, supposed greatness of people, etc.).

When you debunk a theory, you prove it is incorrect. When you show that an idea, a belief, etc., are false, you debunk them, that is, you show that it is not correct, as its supporters claim. When you prove that someone or their actions are not as great as they claim them to be, you debunk them. You expose the truth about something or show that it is false. Debunking is also ridiculing something as not so great as it is supposed to be.

  • The scientist's claim to have found a new method of propulsion has been debunked by the latest research which has shown the scientist's claim to be wrong and unworkable.
  • The 9/11 attack on WTC successfully debunked the CIA's claim to be the foremost intelligence organization of the world, as the CIA had not had even a suspicion of the attack.
