debunk (verb) disprove; expose (claims, theories, supposed greatness of people, etc.).
When you debunk a theory, you prove it is incorrect. When you show that an idea, a belief, etc., are false, you debunk them, that is, you show that it is not correct, as its supporters claim. When you prove that someone or their actions are not as great as they claim them to be, you debunk them. You expose the truth about something or show that it is false. Debunking is also ridiculing something as not so great as it is supposed to be.
