decelerate (verb) slow down.
When you slow down your car, you decelerate it. You drive it at a less speed than before. When something slows down, it decelerates. 'They were just waiting for the car to decelerate at the curve, and attacked it.' This means that they attacked the car as it slowed down at the curve. Enrolment in arts course has decelerated for want of job opportunities. That is, admissions into arts courses were very slow.
