decomposition (noun) decay (of a dead body).

The decomposition of a dead body is the decay of the dead body, the rotting of the dead body, stiffening and emitting unbearable smell because of natural chemical action. 'The dead body under the bridge was in a state of advanced decomposition.' This means that the dead body had been rotting for quite sometime.

  • The carcass of the animal in a state of total decomposition lay in the field with insects and worms crawling around, and vultures hovering above and feasting on it.
  • One of the greatest wonders is the ancient Egyptian technique of preserving dead bodies from decomposition, as seen in the case of the mummies. A still greater wonder is the perfect state of preservation in which the body of St. Thomas has lain unaffected by decomposition in a coffin, in a church in Goa, India, for the past four hundred years.
