decorum (noun) propriety.

You have decorum when your behavior, speech, etc., are suitable for the occasion, and thus gets you others' respect. Well-mannered people have a sense of decorum. They do whatever suits the occasion, saying the right word at the right time, and behaving the right way. People consider them to be decent enough to be respected. They are highly refined.

  • The old world sense of decorum in which youngsters were trained is fast disappearing. The sense of propriety, that is saying and doing the right thing at the right time, in a social situation, that constitutes decorum is met with rarely nowadays.
  • Decorum is what keeps the society moving smoothly. If we were to say all wrong things and do the wrong things, society would just be a group of uncultured human animals.
