When you deface a wall or any such surface, you spoil the look of it, by writing or drawing on it as you like, or by sticking bills on it. Defacing is damaging the good appearance of something, which is very clean, especially by writing or drawing on it, after which it looks very ugly.

  • The sculptures and the architecture that represent the culture and the degree of refinement of a civilization are often defaced by ignorant and irresponsible invaders.
  • The splendid Sphinx was defaced by British soldiers who used the face of the Sphinx as a target for rifle shooting practice, following which it lost its original grandeur.
