defeatist (adj) being in a mood to accept defeat; not hoping to win.

If a person is defeatist, they expect defeat; they do not expect to win, so they do not even make an attempt to win. They are resigned to defeat. They think that even their attempts to win will be of no avail. They are pessimists and have a negative attitude.

  • The only reason why Britain became the biggest colonial power in spite of its small territory was that it never had a defeatist attitude, and went ahead with a positive frame of mind.
  • Persons who aim big in life and have great ambitions never have a defeatist attitude. It is all in the attitude. A defeatist attitude can make even the most probable winner, a loser.
