deference (noun) respect or regard for someone or something.

If your behavior shows that you have respect for someone or something, you have deference for them. When you respect others' wishes or sentiments, and are willing to accept their opinions, you accept them in deference to them or their sentiments. Out of deference to the customs of your society you wear formal clothes on ceremonies. That is, you wear such clothes because you respect the customs.

  • Though she did not like the idea of discontinuing her studies and attending to her family business full-time, Jane did that out of deference to her father's wishes.
  • When Christians attend the funeral of their near and dear they wear black clothes in deference to the customs of Christianity.
