defray (verb) pay for someone else's expenses; meet the expenses incurred by others.

You defray the expenses which others have to incur for doing your job, if you pay them the money they have to spend on your job. When you send someone to a place on your purpose, you defray their travel expenses, and the incidentals. That is, you pay them for the travel and the related expenses. Government defrays the expenditure on the visits of its ministers to foreign countries. Companies defray the travel expenses of their employees on company's purpose.

  • The journal 'The Scientific Human' is posted free of charge to its subscribers but if any subscribers want it to be sent by courier, they are required to defray the courier charges.
  • The policy of the 'Noble People School' requires the parents or guardians of the children to defray the expenses that the school spends on the snacks it gives to the children.
