defrock (verb) remove a priest from their job.

When a priest does something wrong or unethical, they are defrocked. That is, they are removed from their job officially. They are declared as no more eligible to carry on their religious duties. Defrocking is the maximum punishment given to a priest for their wrongdoing. In a way it is to be disgraced.

  • There have been many instances where the Church has defrocked the priests for making indecent advances and proposals to church-going women.
  • The Church defrocked Bishop John Border as he was found guilty of embezzling church funds collected to build a home for the aged.
