defunct (adj) (of an organization, institution, etc.) no longer existing, functioning, or in use.

A defunct organization is one that has closed down, and no longer functioning. A school which no longer exists is defunct. An association which has ceased to be is defunct. A machine or a technology no longer in use is defunct.

  • As civilization progresses, the practices and implements, once thought to be novel, innovative, and were widely used, become defunct with the advent of new technology.
  • With the rising number of divorces, marriage as a social institution with such concepts as commitment to a spouse and making the marriage survive against all odds appears to have become defunct.
