deign (verb) condescend; come down in status or level.
When you deign to do something, you make it appear that you are doing it as if it were beneath your dignity or status. When as a boss you call on your subordinate, you deign to visit them, that is, you feel you are doing something a person your level does not do. When you deign to talk to someone, you make them feel that you are a person of a higher level talking to one of a lower level, and that you are doing it as a favor.
