delete (verb) remove (words from writing or printing).

When you delete words or lines from what is written or printed, you delete them. 'Some portions of the essay have been deleted in editing it, as they are too difficult for the young readers to follow'. This means certain portions of the essay, too difficult for young readers to understand, have been omitted while editing it. Names are deleted from a list, when they are removed.

  • The computer keyboard has a key named 'Delete' that lets us delete the matter we type, if the matter has been typed wrongly, or if it has to be changed.
  • When certain participants in a survey were given a list of things with 'money' as one of them, and were asked to delete whatever they did not need, none of them deleted the word 'money'.
