deliberate (verb) think very carefully about something.

When you deliberate on something, you think very carefully about it. Before making a very important decision you deliberate, that is, you consider every aspect of the matter very carefully. When a group of people deliberate whether a project is to be taken or not, they think together very carefully about and discuss the matter thoroughly, and then only make a decision.

  • The military court deliberated for one month and finally decided to court-martial Major Douglas Hanneman for misusing his authority to take revenge on the abductors of his son.
  • The senators deliberated on the status of the people who entered the country illegally and finally decided to give them refugee status.
