delta (noun) an area formed by the branches of a river on two sides, and on the third side by the sea which they join.

The Mississippi delta is the area between the branches the river has and the sea which they join. So is the Nile delta, the area between the branches of the river and the sea which they join. A delta is very fertile and an area flourishing with civilization.

  • Crops which require fertile soil thrive in a delta because the land is fertile there and the crops are fed by the waters of the branches of the river.
  • The delta, very small, and very close to the sea, is unfit for the growth of crops, as the soil is very saline.
