delude (verb) deceive; cheat.
Deceiving a person is deluding them. When you make someone believe a lie, you delude them into believing it. If a young man makes a girl believe that he is in love with her without being really in love, he deludes her. 'He is deluding himself if he thinks that they like him.' This means that he has the wrong impression that they like him.
- The salesman deluded her into buying what looked like gold, but was not. Only a few days later, did she realize that she had been deluded by the salesman into believing that it was gold.
- John deludes himself into thinking that he has impressed Ann and that she's fallen for him. He doesn't know that Ann is just pretending as she has done with many other young men.
