delusion (noun) a false belief.

A false belief a person has especially about themselves or the situation they are in, is a delusion. A delusion a person has about their greatness is their delusion of grandeur, a false belief that they are greater than they actually are. If a person wrongly believes that everyone likes them, they are under a delusion of being popular. A delusion is a rather psychological condition. 'Delusions crowded his mind of his own superiority and importance.' This means he had all false beliefs of his superiority and importance.

  • Sharon is to be pitied. She nurses delusions about her good looks and her being the most beautiful girl around here. In fact, there are other girls more beautiful than she is.
  • Frank is quite realistic and has no delusions about his competence in the game. He is quite aware of his shortcomings as a player.
