When a person is insane, when they are mad, they are demented. They are mentally very seriously ill. Demented people behave in a crazy manner, knowing hardly what they do, and what they talk. Sometimes they are dangerous too. When a person behaves as if they were mad because something has upset them seriously, they are demented. The grief over the death of, or a feeling of anxiety about the safety of someone near and dear, to a person may make them demented, that is, make them behave madly.
