depict (verb) portray; describe a person or a thing (in writing or by drawing).

When a painting depicts a beautiful lady, it shows the picture of a beautiful woman, drawn by a painter. A novel or a story depicts a certain character in a certain way, when it shows the character as having certain characteristics. Shakespeare's 'The Merchant of Venice' depicts Shylock as a stony-hearted Jew with his mind set only on money. That is, the play shows Shylock as a cruel money-minded man.

  • The beautiful painting adorning the church shows Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus and Joseph looking fondly at the child. Everyone who visits the church admires the way the three are depicted.
  • Some critics wonder if in depicting Satan as a rebel against God, Milton was not attributing his passion of liberty to Satan.
