deplore (verb) regret deeply; disapprove of; criticize something very strongly.

When you deplore the senseless killing of innocents by the terrorists, you regret such a thing has happened and condemn it. You disapprove of it and openly criticize it. You deplore the falling standards of artistic values in movies if you regret it and express your disapproval of it openly. You deplore the ill-treatment of someone when you criticize it.

  • The student body deplored the hike in the tuition fee by most universities and expressed their disapproval of it by taking out a procession and raising slogans against the hike.
  • The environmentalists and wildlife conservationists deplore that the laws enacted so far against deforestation lack tooth and are not properly enforced. They demanded that the government view the issue more seriously.
