depose (verb) remove from throne or a high position; give evidence under oath.

A king, or the head of a state, is deposed when they are removed from their position either by popular revolt, as a result of a conspiracy, or by military forces. History is full of instances of rulers having been deposed by ambitious people out to usurp thrones and secure power, though they are not in the line of succession. To make sworn statement in a court of law is to depose. A person deposes when under oath they give information connected with a case to the court.

  • King Richard I of England was deposed and beheaded by the Republicans under the leadership of Oliver Cromwell, as he refused to sign the charter of rights they had submitted to him.
  • The President of Pakistan was deposed in a military coup by its present President Pervez Musharaff, who proclaimed military rule in the country.
