derelict (adj) abandoned; left uncared for.

A building, a piece of land, or a ship left uncared for and unattended is derelict. A derelict building is a neglected building and is in a very bad condition because it hasn't been used for a long time. So is a piece of land left in a state of neglect, derelict.

  • The derelict house with its doors and window shutters gone and with none to take care of it is now the retreat of derelicts, vagabonds, nesting birds, and reptiles.
  • The derelict land has been occupied by land grabbers, whom it will be very difficult to evict, as they encroached it a long time ago.
