deride (verb) make fun of; ridicule.

A person derides you if, having a low opinion of you, they make fun of you, shows you no respect and laughs at you. We deride a play which is too sentimental. We ridicule the too sentimental dialogues in it. 'He derided the braggart's claim of connections with big people.' This means, when he boasted of his high connections, he was ridiculed.

  • People deride Philip's pompous language and affected behavior. That he is the subject of their jokes and ridicule, he is not aware of.
  • Dave's claims that he is too clever to be cheated are often dismissed as so much of bragging. His own friends deride him and joke at him whenever he mentions it.
