derivative (adj) copied or imitated.

A derivative design is a copied design, not the original of the designer. A derivative idea is a copied idea. Anything produced in imitation of something else is derivative and does little credit to its author.

  • The later 18th century European architecture was largely a derivative of the Greeko-Roman architecture which itself is a mixed style of the original Greek architecture and its Roman adaptation.
  • The later European epics, all of them written, unlike Homer's Iliad, were all derivative in their style and features, as they were all imitative of the Iliad.
