desecrate (verb) profane; damage or destroy holy places, treat them disrespectfully.

When people destroy or damage a temple, they desecrate it. When a holy book is burnt, it is desecrated. When a person damages an idol of worship, they desecrate it. If graves are damaged, they are desecrated.

  • In the clashes between the two communities in the place, the members of one community desecrated the places of worship of the other community, by setting them afire.
  • The invading army desecrated all the temples in the country they invaded, by plundering all the valuables in them and then razing them to the ground.
