despise (verb) have absolutely no respect; treat with utter disrespect.

You despise a thing or a person when you do not show any respect for it, or for them. You find them worthless and deserving no respect whatever. Decent people despise corruption, that is, they strongly dislike corruption and consider it evil. The feudal lords of the past despised the peasants. That is, they treated them with contempt. You despise evil social practices if you hate them.

  • Decent people everywhere despise opportunist politicians and opportunist politics as they corrupt and pose a danger to the society.
  • We should despise poverty but not those who are poor. No person likes to be poor and to despise the poor is to disrespect the helpless, which is inhuman.
