destitute (adj) utterly poor.

A person is destitute when they have no money at all, no food, and no place to live in. Total poverty making a person go without food or shelter makes a person destitute. 'Now that both his parents are gone he is destitute.' This means he has no money, no food, and no home.

  • Bedridden and deserted by his sons and daughters, the old Mr. Smith is destitute, and instead of starving and being homeless, he decided to join an old-age home.
  • Mother Teresa's mission was to help the helpless. So she started a number of charity homes across India to care for the destitute by providing them food and shelter free.
