desultory (adj) aimless; unplanned.
If you study without a plan or a purpose, your study is desultory. A desultory walk is an aimless walk or wandering. A desultory conversation is one in which we hop subject to subject without talking about anything in particular.
- The young man is very well-read. His reading, however, is desultory, as he skips from subject to subject, never studying any subject in depth and always reading without a plan.
- The committee which had met to discuss a number of items on the agenda had a desultory discussion and did not deal with any item conclusively.
