detraction (noun) the act of making a thing or a person seem less good than it is or they are; criticism.

You indulge in detraction if you try to make a person appear less great than they actually are, by criticizing them or talking badly about them. 'His detraction of the President takes nothing away from her greatness.' This means that his bad talk about the President fails to make her greatness seem the less. 'They enjoy the CEO's detraction by his subordinates.' This means that they are happy when the subordinates criticize the CEO.

  • Allen's detraction of his wife has become so intense in the recent past that she has sued for a divorce.
  • The press indulged in such a detraction of the Secretary of Finance that he resigned the job, unable to bear such bad talk about him.
