deviate (verb) turn away from (the normal or the usual); depart; diverge.

When a person deviates they turn away from the expected path. You deviate if you do not act according to the plan you have drawn for your action; a bus deviates if it changes from its usual route. A government deviates if it acts differently from its declared policy. If we deviate from truth, we lie, and are dishonest.
