devious (adj) (of a route, narration, etc.) roundabout; erratic; not straightforward; (of behavior) dishonest; deceitful.

When you take a devious route to your destination, you take a roundabout route with a number of turns. A taxi driver may take you to your hotel from the airport by a devious route just to up the meter reading and the fare. A devious person is dishonest. A devious politician is cunning. A devious merchant is a cheat.

  • The wide gap between the Senator's assets and his known sources of income has proved that the senator has earned money by devious means, and of course he is not known particularly for his honesty.
