diaphanous (adj) very thin and transparent (of cloth or fabric).

A light, fine, and delicate piece of cloth or fabric is diaphanous. You can see through it. The upper cover of the eyes is diaphanous, that is, it is a very thin membrane, and can be seen through. A diaphanous curtain is a thin curtain hardly hiding what lies behind. 'The diaphanous uppers showed the breasts of the nightclub artiste.' This means that the breasts of the nightclub artiste could be seen through the transparent uppers she was wearing.

  • The cocoons built by certain insects for their offspring are so diaphanous that through them one can see the larvae developing in the cocoon.
  • One of the women in the beauty pageant wore clothes made of diaphanous material, which hardly concealed her body.
