dictum (noun) an authoritative statement.

A statement that someone in authority has made and is accepted as correct and followed by people is a dictum. Such a statement, that is, a dictum, is taken as standard and no one questions it. 'The country above self' is a dictum which is worthy of being followed by any patriotic citizen. That is, it is a statement of a principle which is good for every citizen to follow. He never goes beyond his father's dictum, 'neither borrow nor lend.' This means that he follows this principle always.

  • 'Do or die,' is a dictum that propels people to action when they have to achieve something or when they set their goals high.
  • 'The customer is the most important person on our premises,' is the dictum every businessperson had better follow if their business is to thrive.
