digression (noun) (in speech or in writing) discussion of a thing not related to the main topic.

Talking or writing about something other than the main topic is digression. Digression makes your speech or writing rather wandering and distracting. It confuses your listeners or readers. Sometimes, if the digression is in the form of a joke, it may be of some relief to your audience. When talking of the virtues of the milk, if you go on talking at length about the cow or beef, you indulge in a digression.

  • Though some of the episodes in the writing are interesting, they are a clear digression from the topic which the writer has set before him to deal with.
  • Sometimes, it may so happen that the digressions in a speech are more interesting and entertaining than the main topic, especially if the topic happens to be abstract and serious.
